Middle Years

The Middle Years Programme

MYP 1 corresponds to year 6 in the Swedish school system. The programme gives students a strong foundation for higher education, whether that is a Swedish gymnasium, the IB Diploma Programme or a school elsewhere in the world.

According to the IB, the MYP aims to help students develop understanding, their emerging sense of self and their responsibility in their community. The programme is taught according to guiding principles: teaching and learning in context, conceptual understanding, approaches to learning, and service as action through community projects.

Guiding principles

Teaching and learning in context

Learning is connected to students' own lives and their experience of the world. Global contexts help students explore their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet.

Conceptual understanding

Students use concepts to explore issues of personal, local and global significance. The MYP prescribes 16 key interdisciplinary concepts along with related concepts for each discipline.

Approaches to learning (ATL)

ATL helps students learn how to learn, encouraging the application of knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts and developing social, thinking, research, communication and self-management skills.

Service as action

Students are encouraged to be caring members of the community with a desire to positively impact the lives of others and the environment, applying what they learn to everyday life.
